Adding a search function on a web site helps visitors find information really quickly. I am sure you would have come across several web sites where you find the Search this web site or equivalent field, and I am sure you would have used it. So I will not gloss over the benefits of including a web site search function - we all know how useful it is.
There are several ways you can go about adding a search feature on your web site. You can write a search program (script) for your web site in a server-side language, download a free or a paid one and install it on your web site, use one of the several services available on the web, including Google search!
